I think it depends on the situation. If it was someone you argued with then perhaps asking him/her out for lunch or dinner would be great. If it was someone that hurt you badly or the other way around then you might consider giving more time or if it has been that long then try to put some effort to make him/her feel that you are willing to move on with what is behind and get back in your old kind of relationship.

How I hope it would be that easy when things arent really complicated but things are right from the start and its supposedly is not meant to be.
