GLUTATHIONE
• is one of the body’s most important and powerful antioxidants. In what way does Glutathione help? Oxygen is consumed and burned by the body. In the process, millions of cells generate by-products called free radicals which cause cellular damage when they travel through the body. Glutathione serves as powerful antioxidant to protect key cell components from damage by neutralizing these free radicals.
A tripeptide composed of the amino acids glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Its molecular weight is 307.33 Da. Glutathione is found in all cells in the body, in the bile, in the epithelial lining fluid of the lungs, and, at much smaller concentrations, in the blood. Its active form is the chemically reduced form, called "GSH."
It improves the cardiovascular and immune systems. It also detoxifies. Free radicals and peroxides are eliminated by this wonderful supplement. Glutathione helps, among other things, in:
• DNA synthesis and repair - DNA repair is an important factor in the prevention of CANCER since it prevents the proliferation of mutations in the cells. The risk of PROSTATE CANCER, the most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst men in the US and now in the Philippines, increases with age. As men get older, their cells become more susceptible to OXIDATIVE STRESS, which in turns leads to increased DNA damage.

Recent findings suggest that lipoic acid curative effects is due to modulation of regulation in eukaryotes. This occurs due to lipoic acid acting as an oxidant, not a reductant.

Lipoic acid has been shown in cell culture experiments to increase cellular uptake of glucose by recruiting the glucose transporter GLUT4 to the cell membrane, suggesting its use in diabetes. Studies of rat aging have suggested that the use and lipoic acid results in improved memory performance and delayed structural mitochondrial decay. As a result, it may be helpful for people with ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE OR PARKINSON'S. In 2009 a study found that it reduced triglycerides in mice.
