BPL(Broadband over power line) fever is catching up, and this is just the start. Cincinatti based ISP Current Communications uses the power lines run by Cinergy, the local utility in Cincinnati to provide Broadband connections.
As per the NYTimes, this concept has existed for some time in European markets especially Spain and we might be on the verge of seeing a similar trend in the US. For current Broadband providers, laying infrastructures for BPL from scratch is not a cost effective option. In addition to this, BPL has been widely endorsed as a suitable alternative to Cable and DSL broadband by the like of FCC and tech giants like Google. According to the article, the two major BPL offerings available in the US currently are through Current/Cinergy based out of Cincinnati, and the city of Manassas, Va., which has teamed up with ComTek Communications Technology, and was the first major US city to offer commercial BPL services. A slew of utility companies in the US are currenty researching the feasibility of similar offerings as well.
